Knowing how to watch the Marvel movies in order has become fairly complicated in 2021. Not only are there the mainline cinematic installments, but the Disney Plus shows are heavily tied to the movies – to the point where Falcon and The Winter Soldier sets up the forthcoming (though not yet officially announced) Captain America 4, and Loki breaks the multiverse, which is going to change everything going forward in the MCU.

With that in mind, our guide to the Marvel films aims to offer you a few ways to consume your favorite superhero content. We recommend watching the movies for the first time in release order, but if you're already a Marvel aficionado, you can mix things up with a chronological rewatch. Whichever way you decide, this article on how to watch the Marvel movies in order should help clear some things up.

Also of note: before we dive off the deep end in Marvel lore, we have decided to take out an extended segment on the Marvel TV shows not released on Disney Plus. Why? Well, Agents of Shield, the Netflix shows, The Runaways, and more have a questionable place within the Marvel canon and can confuse things for new viewers, whereas WandaVision has a clear place within the continuity and was overseen by Marvel overlord Kevin Feige. Best for: Newcomers to the Marvel movies.

First up, here's how to watch the Marvel movies in release order. Marvel films, we should note, are split into Phases, with the end of a Phase typically indicating a natural end to a story arc. The beginning of a Phase, therefore, signals the introduction of new, important characters. Below, we go through Phases 1 to 4 in release order. Yes, that includes WandaVision/Falcon and The Winter Soldier/Loki. No, they're not technically movies, but the MCU is changing so rapidly that the Disney Plus shows are now just as important.
